Know your rights as a taxpayer in the US

Folks across Atlanta are starting to receive W-2s and other tax documentation so they can file their returns in the next few months. As people prepare their taxes, it can become clear very quickly that no matter how many times you go through tax season, it never seems to get any easier.

It can also be easy to feel intimidated and overwhelmed by the tax code and various requirements of the IRS. However, before you get too frustrated, it can be a good time to remind yourself that you have rights, not just obligations, when it comes to filing taxes.

These rights are referred to as the Taxpayer Bill of Rights, which the IRS has adopted and listed in full on their website. The list informs taxpayers that they have the right to:

  • Be informed about tax laws
  • Have access to clear explanations
  • Challenge or object to IRS actions
  • Be protected from overly intrusive inquiries and examinations by the IRS
  • Have representation when they are dealing with the IRS
  • Expect that the tax system will be fair

All of these are incredibly important, but that doesn’t mean these rights come easily to taxpayers. For instance, you might know that you can challenge IRS actions, but you might not know how to do that. And while you know you have a right to a clear explanation about your taxes, you and the IRS can differ greatly when it comes to what a clear explanation looks like.

Knowing your rights as a taxpayer is crucial, and protecting them is critical. Because of this, it can be wise to work with a tax attorney who is familiar with both aspects.

We insist that your taxpayer rights are protected and your options are known.
